I always get a chuckle out of people trash talking the Polytechs after reading internet experts opinions and articles yet having no experience of their own. Pretty much all of their rifles of that era are top notch Quality: I talk from years of experience when I tell you that the rifles are good to go straight out of the box: If none are present, I'd shoot it for a long while before sending it off for evaluation/refresh. I wouldn't hesitate to use that same strategy I outlined above - buy a used Polytech, shoot it while looking for obvious signs of a headspace problem.

Now, of course, with the onerous burden of FSA-2013, M-1A rifles (new or used) aren't available to those of us in Maryland. With that being the case, I decided to just buy a new rifle. However, when I started my search about 4-5 years ago, I found that knowledge of the Poly rifles was more widespread and all used guns (SA and Poly) were sold at prices almost the same as new. Apparently, a decade or more ago, the Polytechs were a real bargain, with most shooters not knowing anything about them.and consequently low prices. However, I could never find a decent rifle at a reasonable price, so I ended up buying a new SA M-1A. My plan was to get it, shoot it for a while (looking for headspace issues), then send it to Fulton Arms (Kulek) to have it evaluated, and if necessary have a GI bolt fitted to the receiver. There is an issue with the bolts being "out of spec", however, in most cases it doesn't cause any functional problem.īefore buying my SA M-1A, I researched it heavily, settled on a Polytech, then tried to find a reasonably priced specimen. There are many, many people who have shot thousands of rounds out of their Polytech M14s without a problem. And, with all due respect, to Mr Kulek's knowledge of M14 rifles, my understanding is that he's in the business of selling their own M14/M1A rifles and parts, so he has a bias.

Given the experience in the M14/M1A community, I think your statement that "the rest of the Polytech parts are a complete POS" is an overstatement. In a nutshell he said the receivers were very strong but the rest of the Polytechs parts were out of spec and complete POS. Walt Kulik from Fulton Armory, who literally wrote the de facto guide to the M14, posted a thread over on war about thr Polytech M14s. Wouldn't this pretense also apply for the Polytech's M14s?įrom my recollection, the Chinese 1911 frames were popular hosts to custom 1911 builds and the Polytech Legend AKs were held in very high regard. That any identical firearm under a different maker is banned because it's not "colt" and Maryland dropped its enforcement policy because they knew they would lose. are banned.įrom what the State Police told me is the reason the Colt HBar ban is not being enforced is because Smith and Wesson threatened a class action suit based on a government endorsed monopoly stating that only Colt HBars are allowed. Someone pointed this out on a separate thread but to me (it was so off from the original topic it warranted a new thread) that the Polytech M14 is not banned. I classify a rear lug on a M14/M1A in the same class as piston ARs,a solution to an non-existant problem.Alright need some help understanding the law. They use M14s without rear lugs, The team posted a 799/800 (poor guy who dropped a point caught hell). I shot a 1000 yard team match at 29 Palms in when the AMU was still using M14s. I went to sniper school using the M21, I've taught sniper schools using the M21.

While in the guard I ran the AK NG Marksmanship unit and had 30 plus NM M14s on my property book. I've shot it constantly, shooting for the guard until I retired in 1992. I got my M1A in 1977, a couple years later it was converted to a Super Match by Gene Barnett (Barnett Barrels) when he was working as an armor for the NG MTU.
